It has been nearly a year since we made a post on this blog, too long. Life has a way of taking up lots of our time. It doesn't change the feelings in our hearts but it does sidetrack us from the important things sometimes

We've been busy with so many things as of late. Spring planting and chores.

On this beautiful Saturday. Not too warm, not too cool, just perfect for baking bread. Three of my grands are spending the night with us and I will make honey butter and Boysenberry jam for their bread. They will fight over who gets to sleep on the old rope bed with a feather mattress and the losers will have to sleep on a down mattress with a well worn woolen quilt to cover them. Neither group will mind.

Went to a yard sale and scored on a very old antique pine picture frame that we hung over Sister, a vintage oil painting. The plaster is falling off the frame and gives it a perfect deconstructed look that I strive for sometimes. I bought a white artificial punkin for a quarter so my day started out good.

Came home, baked a Spice Cake with Pecan Coconut glaze and some of my wonderful Amish White Bread.

It was a simple day, but a blessed day. I love simple days, the first leaf of Autumn, low sun shining in the windows of my home, warmth in the slight chill of the evening and God in my heart, on my mind, within my soul.

Here is the reciept if you haven't copied it before. So easy and really foolproof.

Amish White Bread

2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C [I just use warm tap water, no thermometer]
2/3 cup white sugar
...1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
6 cups bread flour [I use regular white flour, sometimes self-rising even]

In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in the warm water and then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam.

Mix salt and oil and add to yeast. Mix in flour one cup at a time. [I use the bread hook on my Kitchenaid.]

Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl and turn to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. [I place mine in the microwave to rest.]

punch dough down, turn out onto floured surface and knead for a few minutes. Divide in half, shape into two loaves and place into two well oiled 9x5 inch loaf pans.

Allow to rise for 30 minutes or until dough has risen above the pans.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes.
Have a blessed afternoon and when you pray, say a quick prayer for me and Frank please.

I use mostly candles (electric/battery/real flame) during the Autumn and Winter for its calming effect and try to make a few in the Fall for my Winter use.

The glow is such a comfort and the world seems more at peace with a candle flickering in the room. so,..how about sharing some of your candlelight pictures? I, for one, would love to see the candles in your home. Want to share? I'll start.

I have been baking wonderful dessert breads with Carrots, Pumpkin and Sweet Potatoes. Got my supply of brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup. Flour? Check! Picking up Pecans already! I love baking in the Fall.

The air in Georgia is still a bit heavy but the cooler evening temps are inviting and I am anxious to build our first bonfire and sit around it eating boiled peanuts.

I have been decorating the house, too, for a ladies group from my sister's church, for Autumn Entertaining and just because I love the colors and the fragrances of Autumn.

This is a display I did last year for All Hallow's Eve.

I don't like a lot of spooky stuff but my primitive reenacting clothes work well in this display I think. Kids drop by at Hallowe'en and get to scoop a big dipper of candy from the cauldron. It is so much fun. I love the creativity of their costumes. We usually dress in period clothing and welcome them by candlelight. Nothing scary, but candles scare the daylights out of kids,...especially on all Hallow's Eve!

I am grateful for Fall and plan a big Thanksgiving Gathering each year. We all hold hands and pray. What a wonderful way to unify, to connect with family. Of course, prayer plays a huge role in our lives anyway.

I would like to ask you to pray for me and hubby right now. We have some physcial and other issues that need prayer. If you have a need for prayer please list it in the comments section. I will gladly place it in my Prayer Box.

The prayers of a righteous man (or woman) availeth much! And I intend to do something about it! Among going back to work part time at the school and building a new Children's Ministry from scratch you would think we'd have no time to think cooler temps but we do.

Just thought I would post some of our Dining Room and Keeping Room pictures. Enjoy,...and think Autumn!
This post is in response to Karen's blog request over at 'My Colonial Home'. Great idea, Karen, thanks for posting.

Our blog began in September of 2008. Hubby was recovering from open heart surgery and it was just a way for us to enjoy a bit of communication outside our family. Our hobby for many years has been reenacting the period from 1820-1865 with special emphasis on the Civil War years. We are active ministers of the gospel and so 'Civil' seemed an appropriate adjective for us,...and it denotes the time period we portray. We have collected prims since before marriage and find ourselves 'kin' to all the folks who enjoy the same things so,...'Folks' seemed to tell who we are. I guess you get it now...Civil Folks.

I suffered a double brain aneurysm in 1997 that has left me with severe short-term memory loss. Hubby and I work as a team at everything we get accomplished, he is 'me' and I am 'him'. We discuss each blog post and co-write them, the same thing with the forums and website. We cook together, do yard work, hobby, travel, do art work, write for a primitive magazine (APP), everything,...always together. We really need and depend on each other but we depend on our Father in every way.

We don't know what tomorrow holds but we know who holds tomorrow. Saying this we decided to adopt a scripture that would turn into a daily recitation for us. It will help you too if you are struggling with where you are today and what the future holds.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
Oh, it was warm and a bit humid early on but later a cool summer breeze flew through the yard and it was wonderful.
I've been doing a bit of Autumn decorating and thought I'd post a few pics. These are from my Keeping Room.

Just for starters! Giving our blog and forum friends first shot before we go to eBay and then our sale at home in October.
If you see something interesting, give me a shout. Items are listed in Newly Added Items Album.
Fall is in the air, a bit, lots of good rain from Sir Isaac but anxious for Autumn breezes this way. Thanks for looking.
Blessings~

The breeze, the salt in the air, the warmth of the sun, the shadow of the moon.
We just returned from a beautiful experience. For me, it is soulful, not just a vacation but a blending of the time spent and the time to come all in the present. A way to unwind.
We don't do anything special. Mostly, nothing, but it is a wonderful way to wind down and wind back up for the coming year.
Here are a few pictures you might enjoy.

Had a great time on the ocean, great sunset walks with my hubby, great seafood, great fellowship with my aging parents. But,...I'm glad to be home to my bed, my linen sheets, my stuff, the smell of my home, the light through my windows.
I am thankful for the opportunity to get away but so thankful to be back home.
I added a couple of new things to the Picture Trail. This is one. Thought you might like to see it. A beautiful stoneware heart bowl with a redware type glaze. So perfectly beautiful to me.
I'll post more soon. So glad to 'see' you all again!

I feel ashamed that I have not written in so long. I do hope you can forgive me. I have stopped in from time to time and checked on some of the posts but it has been a whirlwind of a Spring and Summer for me.
I have canned and frozen, jarred and pickled, preserved and put up an assortment of delectables we will eat this Winter. Hubby had a few physical problems, me too, but we are on the mend.
I am so anxious for cooler weather even though we have had the wettest Summer and a bit cooler temps in a few years. I just simply love the cooler weather and the holidays it brings along with it. I am anxious to get the Autumn decor out and 'push' Summer along a bit.
Not much news to write. We have made a few new items for our store.

Put my settle that darling hubby built for me from old plantation pine in the Living Room. I think I like it here.
That's about it.
I do want to tell you that we are involved in restoring an old city gymnasium built in 1935 by the WPA to be used as a theater house and music hall. It will be grand fun when it all comes about. I will post pictures as things really get going. It is on the same city block we live on and already have a musical scheduled for the Autumn of 2013!
We are collecting costuming, sets and props pieces and just anticipating the fun that Folk Life Theater will bring to our little town.
I hope I didn't bore you sharing the simple things of my life. I'm a country girl with a country heart.
Blessings to you all!

Just a quick note to show a Pinkeep Doll I am posting on my Picture Trail tonight. She is handmade from painted fabric, painted eyes and lips and large head pins for her hair. She wears a lovely vintage button necklace and her dress is a blue cotton print. Check her out at www.picturetrail.com/shadetreeprimitives

It is Mothers Day and I have three wonderful children and 8 grands. It is my birthday and I turn 50 something later this month. It is my anniversary and I have been married 39 years on the 26th.
Yesterday we went to town and dropped by the Salvation Army. Look what I found! Almost cheaper than dirt! It is a stone plate. I put some garlic and a fly screen on it and here it is...

Today we did yard work and went to pick up our trailer to load the limbs and this was at the backdoor.

It is a half rusty pierced candolier. I have hung it in the settle for now. I love candlelight and really appreciate my hubby for this gift. I want to use it as a bedside light in the guestroom one day after I get a hanger for it.
I am so blessed and wish every mother a special blessing.

It really is so easy and so delicious. Enjoy!

2 cups warm water
2/3 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil (I use olive.)
6 cups bread flour

In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and then stir in yeast.

Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam. Mix salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Mix in flour 1 cup at a time. (I use the dough hook on my Kitchenaid.)

Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
Place in a well oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat leaving seam side down. Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes and divide in half. Shape into 2 loaves, and place into two well oiled 9x5 inch loaf pans, seam side down. Allow to rise for 30 minutes, or until dough has risen about 1 inch above pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F. (175 C.) for 30 minutes.

Allow to cool before slicing. (If you can stand it!)

I don't know who to give credit to for the receipt but it is wonderful. Today I took one half of the dough and rolled into golf ball size balls and placed three balls in each oiled muffin cup. Made the most beautiful Cloverleaf mufins. I took a half dozen to my elderly neighbor who is fighting Cancer and she was thrilled as bread is her favorite thing to eat right now.

The grands ate the rest of them with butter and honey! I even had enough left to form a smallish loaf for the girls and they had a wonderful tea party of bread and tea.

It is a good feeling to make a simple staple with my own hands and I had a great day making bread with and teaching my grands. It is easy and delicious. The flavor is 1000% better than a bread machine to me.Civil Folkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12562008704421534000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403491763208835861.post-18609657940200724012012-04-16T13:47:00.001-04:002012-04-16T13:56:08.202-04:00Darn it!

That's what I try to do, especially on our period stockings. The picture shows my sewing kit spread out in preparation for darning one of hubby's cotton stockings.

The use of a darning egg is crucial so that you get the proper 'bend' in the repair so that it is more comfortable. I simply pull the stocking over the egg, use my thread to make a warp a bit larger than the hole and then weave the thread the opposite direction following the original weave of the fabric. Not difficult and gets better with experience. It is such a simple pleasure to repair something of value rather than tossing it on the trash heap.

I have pictured my ebony wood darner, a blown glass egg which is also known as an encourager egg that is placed in the hens nesting box. I even have a sweet potato! Sothron girls used whatever they had on hand for a repair. Also pictured are assorted wool and cotton threads, some needles and iron snipping scissors.

I hope you have enjoyed your visit to this small corner of my world.

Darn it!
...with all this wonderful Amish White Bread?

I can't remember where the recipe came to me but it is my 'all time favorite'!

I have made bread for years and it takes a lot of training and judgement to make good bread but I found this receipt and it was perfect on the first try!

Here it is pictured with some creamy butter and a vintage bread knife. When it came out of the oven, my grandson, Frank and I ate half the loaf right on the spot with butter and homemade blueberry preserves.

Homemade bread really helps to make a home.
Here is a picture of what keeps us motivated. Eight grandchildren! We had our Easter egg hunt on Saturday because our three children go to different churches in different parts of our state.

Of course, we miss having them all together on Easter Sunday, but our hearts are filled with joy knowing that they are all in their own churches worshipping and serving the risen Lord!

The eggs and bunnies are fun, the meal and fellowship is sweet, but these children all know why we celebrate this day. It is the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is the celebration of hope. It is a time for reflection on what Father God has given to us through His Son.

May your Easter or Passover be a blessed one with family by your side and God in your heart.
I was so surprised to find that it was signed by the author. Isn't Frank a darling? I was so excited I jumped up and down and read until midnight!

Like Tasha, I like to think of myself in 1830, a simple time where life seems slower, more kind and it completes me.

Blessings,
Frank and I are preparing for an Easter musical at our church and we set the table for the Last Supper scene. Frank insists that the men eat at the table for the visual effect and we make these 2000 year old Chinese Tea Eggs.

I even plan to use the shells in an art project as I can't bear to throw them away!

If you want to make your own, here's how:

Boil your eggs.
When done, gently tap them with a spoon all over.
Place them back in the water in their cracked shells.
Add 1/4 cup soy sauce, 3 TBS. of loose tea, Chinese Five Spice (Or your own concoction of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg) and some salt.
Simmer two hours.
Remove from heat until cool.
Peel and serve or leave in shells in the original egg container in the refrigerator for a few days.

They are delicious and...they look prim enough for The Last Supper!Civil Folkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12562008704421534000noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403491763208835861.post-10390235072947267492012-03-26T22:25:00.002-04:002012-03-26T22:35:33.984-04:00One Of My Favorite Things<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsL6zbWSCFRxbLGFjhtjA2lY7jyDirUCp5ST7JzRAP0JrvYnGY4iCmPtM5Ut4mbWhg8ewIa8VvxmL6mPAgFUyUxF8pt_kQ1OL3X31p4JeG6yiZ5uG9n6xLupwVhGD_gZdrzEQgz42e2wLR/s400/100_6527.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5724397596152514482" />

I recently posted a repro doll my hubby gave me and thought I would post this one, too.

Estelle is one of my favorite things. She is named after my paternal aunt and Estelle is a wax over paper mache' English doll. She was made in the first half of the 1800's and has a slit in her head on the top where her real hair ringlets are inset. She has wonderful glass eyes and her hands and fingers are a finely woven fabric. Estelle's shoes are stitched of leather. Her dress, I believe, is not original but is vintage lace. She sports a pink satin belt and a golden brooch.

Her face is crazed from years of humidity and cold but I love her just the same. She was another anniversary gift from Frank. He knows how to treat me right!

It pleases me to save these dollies and to protect them, much like God saved me and protects me with His Spirit.

If you are tattered and torn and crazed tonight, know that the peace of God will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Thanks for stopping by.Civil Folkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12562008704421534000noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403491763208835861.post-37013426747616116502012-03-19T15:11:00.008-04:002012-03-19T16:57:24.026-04:00Happy Birthday To Me...(Well, it isn't my birthday!)...this month, or next month, but hubby got me this wonderful early gift. I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet!

As a reenactor...my name is Rheema Rispanti. I was born in 1810 in the olde country of Rumania. We migrated to the United States and my wonderful grandmother, Anna Christiann, made this doll for me patterned after those dolls she had in the late 1700's. I have named her Anne.

Here is her perch on the guest room washstand. She likes it here among the woolen curtains and coverlets, the grainsack pillow cases and the porcelain bowl.

I just love the detail of her little fingers and hands. I am used to hardworking hands for a woman's work is never done on the homestead. Anne plays a wonderful harpsichord with her long, delicate fingers.

Anne's little face is scarred and worn, not perfect by any standards, just like me, but she is loved.

I do hope you have enjoyed this little trip with me. Frank got the 22 inch doll on eBay which was made by artist Daun Rochelle of Florida. If you get a chance to own one of her dolls, go for it! The quality is amazing and Anne will have a permanent place in my home and in my heart.

I guess a girl can have a birthday everday if someone loves her as much as Frank loves me!

Civil Folkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12562008704421534000noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403491763208835861.post-7328468606622398572012-03-16T18:50:00.001-04:002012-03-16T18:52:02.138-04:00A Taste O' Ireland!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 272px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhitLcPzeISloefpCCylVi7xG075c2NrkCWTGE4rAwxA9vZg10wEXKjbJSr2wfA0E0yFFwifPd41bewX664ggNbgG9kCcd4rya5EbfIg5KGrDSEI3NYaImnvvEaXl9ZZPMUAZ0NOHYhp7H4/s400/100_6495-001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720631486449575026" />

...as I was collecting the items for our traditional St. Patrick's Day meal, I stumbled across this wonderful specimen...

It is what mama always called an Irish Potato but this one is special...it is in the shape of a heart!
